Early Company History

French-Canadian inventor J. A. Bombardier developed a new type of caterpillar track system suitable for snowy conditions. His vehicle system featured toothed rubber wheels and a rubber and cotton track that wrapped around the rear wheels. In 1937, Bombardier obtained his first patent for the seven-passenger B7, which is considered the first modern snowmobile. 

The Growth of a New Industry 

As engines decreased in size, Bombardier was able to create the one-person Ski-Doo snowmobile in 1959. He became the first to mass produce snowmobiles, and he had plenty of new competitors enter the market with similar vehicles. The technology of the sleds continued to improve with more safety features and increased rider comfort.  

Ski-Doo Snowmobiles Today

In 1998, Ski-Doo snowmobiles celebrated 40 years in business. In 2000, the Ski-Doo Summit 700 Highmark snowmobile was named the "Mountain Muscle Sled of the Year" by SnoWest Magazine. The three millionth Ski-Doo snowmobile rolled off the line in 2013, and we continue to offer best-in-class sleds in every major category.
